Hisashige Tanaka invented a method of smoothing rapeseed oil supply by using air pressure to provide brighter and more stable light for a long period of time and then manufactured Mujin-to (long-burning oil lamp) with this method.

It was said that this lamp was ten times brighter than candlelight.
Its price, between one and three ryo (old currency unit), was quite expensive; however, the sales were good because of the high quality.
It was very popular, especially with merchants.
It is said that Hisashige Tanaka used an air rifle made in the Netherlands as a reference when inventing the mujin-to.
