The first Japanese-made direct current (DC) dynamo for incandescent lamp (voltage 125V, and estimated current 40A) was designed by Ichisuke Fujioka (then professor at The Imperial College of Engineering) and manufactured by Miyoshi Factory in 1885.

In November of the same year, the nighttime Grand Sumo Tournament was held to celebrate the newly-built Bank of Tokyo Meeting Hall, and 40 incandescent lamps lit up the hall with power from the newly-made generator.
