Shumisen-gi (Astronomical Clock)

Shumisen-gi
Shumisen-gi

This Shumisen-gi (Astronomical clock) is a celestial globe/clock to express the Buddhist view of the universe.

Shumisen is a mountain in the Buddhist view.
In the Buddhist world view, which was inherited from ancient India, Shumisen was the center of the universe, and it was said that the celestial bodies, including the Sun traveled around Shumisen.
Shumisen-gi was made by the request of Buddhist priests who were afraid that the Ptolemaic system from the West would spread.
Although Shumisen-gi wasn't made based on a heliocentric system, it is said that very high astronomical knowledge was required in order to reproduce the celestial bodies' motion on it.
