In 1931, Shibaura Engineering Works developed VC-A, the first upright vacuum cleaner produced in Japan.

Its price was 110 yen, which was roughly the 2 months' starting salary of a college graduate.
The vacuum cleaner comprised a combination of a brush and a motor, positioned close to the floor.
It had wheels, which meant it only required little force to move it over the floor, and an adjustable handle, which together made cleaning that much easier.
Considering the dust filtration effect and air permeability, the dust bag, which determines the performance of a vacuum cleaner, was made of cloth sewn in the shape of a pouch with aluminum clasps holding the bag at the end to prevent the dust and debris being blown out.
