In 1972, with the cooperation of Kyoto University, Toshiba began research into structural analysis of the Japanese language.

In 1974, research began into kana-Kanji conversion based on analysis of the components of phrases, which led, in 1978, to Japan's first practical kana-Kanji conversion system.
It combined separately developed small, low-cost Kanji processing hardware, a compact operating system, and an on-screen editor.
On September 26, 1978, the first Japanese-language word processor, the JW-10, was released.
The day was established as the "Day of the Word Processor."
