Japan's First Electric Refrigerator

In 1929, Shibaura Engineering Works started research and development on refrigerators based on the GE product.

In 1930, the first household refrigerator (SS-1200) in Japan was completed and came into existence in the Tokyo plant (in front of present JR Oimachi Station) of Shibaura Engineering Works.
This magnificent machine had a capacity of 125 liters, weighed 157 kg, and bore a remarkable resemblance to a safe.
It had the characteristic flat-top design, but with a hermetically-sealed compressor, condenser, and controller exposed on the cabinet.
