Japan's First Business-use Hydroelectric Power Plant

Kyoto-Keage Power Station
Kyoto-Keage Power Station

With the exclusion of privately-owned generators, the first hydroelectric power generation in Japan launched at Keage Power Station, constructed in 1891.

When it opened, it initially operated with two pelton turbines imported from the USA each with a capacity of 120hp and two DC generators from Edison each with a capacity of 80kW, under the directorship of Dr.Fujioka.
In ten years, the company managed to install nineteen generators with a total capacity of 1800kW.
These included two locally manufactured turbines by Ishikawajima Shipyard and one 60kW two-phase AC generator from SEW(Shibaura Engineering Works).
Dr.Fujioka was a pioneer in hydroelectric power generation, and was involved in the design and operation of many hydroelectric power stations around the country.
