Japan's First Elevator

Asakusa Ryoun-kaku
Asakusa Ryoun-kaku

In 1890, the twelve-story Asakusa Ryoun-kaku was built.

Ichisuke Fujioka installed two arc lamps on top of this skyscraper.
He also designed Japan's first electrically-powered elevator for the building.
The elevator operated nonstop, from the first to the eighth floor.
The capacity of the elevator car was 20 people.
It is recorded that seats covered with futons, mirrors, and electric lamps were installed inside the car.
In 1979, the Japan Elevator Association established 'Elevator Day' on November 10th when this elevator started operation.
