Arc Lamp

The First Light Turned on in Japan
The First Light Turned on in Japan

During the anniversary banquet on 25th March 1878 to celebrate the opening of Central Telegraph Office, Ichisuke Fujioka, under the guidance of William Edward Ayrton, managed to light a Duboscq arc lamp using 50 Grove cells.

This became the first instance of an electric lighting in Japan, and in commemoration the 25th of March has been designated as the Electricity Day.
In November of 1882, for promotional purposes an Electric Company set up and lit the latest model Brush arc lamp at the company's temporary office in Ginza.
It seemed that it was unbelievably bright for the people who only knew candlelight and the light of oil lamps.
